Birth and its implications

During the birth the baby's head receives a lot of pressure (compression) as it passes through the mother's pelvis. After being born you can watch as the bones of the baby's head decompress and their appearance becomes more normal.

Sometimes this decompression phase is incomplete, especially if the birth has been very quick or very slow, or if forceps or suction were required.

In this case there can still be compression within the bones of the baby's head even though their appearance is normal. Then the baby tends to cry, is irritable and has problems feeding, sleeping or with digestion.

Why does a compression to the head (cranial) affect a baby so much?

Between the bones of the baby's head there are openings which allow the cranial nerves to pass through so they can communicate with the internal organs.

If the baby's head is still compressed these cranial nerves can become irritated as they pass through the openings in the bones which affects organ function and creates problems.

The Treatment

Case 1 - the baby cries, has problems sleeping and does not like being face up

The tension received during birth can still be present in the tissues. The baby is uncomfortable and expresses it by crying. And if you add more pressure to the head by lying them down they become more uncomfortable.

Case 2 - the baby cries and struggles with feeding and might retch or have wind

The baby's diaphragm still has tension which affects the stomach. The baby's head can also still have compression which puts pressure on and irritates the cranial nerve which regulates the digestive process

Case 3 -the baby doesn't sleep, wakes often and is sensitive to noise.

In these cases the baby's nervous system has received a shock which is still stored and this shock needs to be resolved so that the baby can relax.

The osteopath will decompress the bones in the baby's head with light, soft and precise manipulations relaxing the tensions and irritations to the nerves, helping the symptoms to ease and disappear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any adverse reactions?

The reactions to treatment can vary as each baby is unique. Generally the baby is very relaxed after a treatment although sometimes a baby can be a bit irritated for a day or two after a treatment as they adjust to the changes.

How many treatments are required?

The initial consultation is usually 1 hour.
The number of treatments required varies between 2 and 6 sessions depending on the tension in the tissues and the age of the child. As a general rule each baby should have at least 1 session after birth and the sooner after birth the better.

Can the parents influence the level of tension in the baby?

Sometimes the nervous tension of the baby can be related to the tension of the parents. If a father or mother is very stressed they can, unintentionally, affect the wellness of the newborn baby. In this case the treatment can include one of the parents to help the baby.
