Electro Lymphatic Drainage

What is Lymphatic Drainage?

An outline of the lymphatic system

The lymphatic system is, in effect, your body’s cleaning system. It takes the waste from each individual cell and, through a complex system of tiny vessels and lymph nodes, brings this waste to the kidneys to leave the body.

Although you have about twice as much lymph fluid in your body as blood, and even though the lymphatic system carries fluid in a similar way to blood, it does not have its own pump (i.e. your heart for your blood). Therefore if the lymphatic system gets overloaded, there is nothing to keep it moving and you end up with a blockage.

Your lymphatic system is also a very important part of your body’s auto-immune system. Blocked lymphatic vessels and nodes can affect the white blood cell count leading to increased vulnerability to illness and allergies.

Lymphatic drainage works to clear these blockages so that your lymphatic system can flow smoothly, thus eliminating toxins and waste from your body. This helps you both feel and look better!

Why do I need Lymphatic Drainage?

Lymphatic drainage can have a powerful effect on your general health.

  • Helps your body fight infection, speeding up healing and recovery time from illness, and helps prevent recurring infections
  • Helps post operative cases, particularly where the main lymph nodes (under the armpits, sinuses and groin) have been affected
  • Helps digestion and bowel disorders - the lymph around the intestines actively separates nutrients from pathogens.

It can also improve the health and appearance of your skin by:

  • Reducing swelling, puffiness and blotches
  • Giving you clean, healthy pores
  • Speeding up the healing of scar tissue and improving the appearance of stretch marks.

If you’ve ever woken up with puffy eyes, sinus congestion or a sore throat you’ve been personally introduced to your lymphatic system!

What technology is used?

The electro-lymphatic machine in use

Here at Bodyworks we use state-of-the-art technology in a safe and pain-free way to relieve lymphatic congestion, clear blockages and remove toxins from the body.

Your lymphatic drainage therapist will use a hand-held wand to send high-frequency electrical pulses into your lymphatic system. These frequencies break up congestion, clears blockages, rebalances the cells and enhances your immunity. The session is painless, all you may feel is a pleasant tingling sensation.

Electro-lymphatic drainage also reaches areas protected by bony structures such as the chest and hips, and has been found to be more effective per session than manual massage.

What can I do to help?

Lymphatic drainage is about flushing out your system and you can help by drinking plenty of water every day.

Regular exercise also helps as it “pumps” the lymph fluid around the body.

How will I feel?

  • Increased energy after several treatments, but you may feel tired after the initial treatment
  • More frequent urination to flush out the lymph
  • Weight loss from fluid drainage and toning of tissue
  • Pain and swelling should decrease (i.e. breast tenderness, arthritis, muscle spasms etc).

Lymphatic drainage can leave you feeling tired and it is likely you will want to take it easy for the rest of the day following your treatment session. Give your body time to ease back into activity.

How long does it take?

Each session is 45 minutes long. How many sessions required will depend on the condition being treated and what you would like to achieve.

Your therapist will discuss this during the first treatment.
