Nutrition

Let me ask a couple of questions:

  1. If we had a guaranteed cure for cancer, do you think that people would flock to our clinic? I think this one is easy and the answer is, of course, a resounding yes!
  2. If we offered something to help prevent cancer, do you think that people will flock to our clinic? Hmm! Possibly but then again, possibly not which leads to a potential third question,
  3. Why not?

Let me run another thought past you.

World Health Organisation

If someone gets cancer, what is the first thing they do? Change their lifestyle of course! They usually quit smoking, stop drinking, exercise more and eat healthily. Will this make a difference to their cancer? YES but of course by now, it is usually too late. Radiation, chemotherapy, surgery and maybe even death are on the cards!

Interestingly, the World Health Organisation has stated that 85% of cancers are down to lifestyle with 50% being due to dietary choices.

The Modern Breakfast

Governmental Health Departments make us well aware of the dangers of smoking and excessive drinking and we are all told to exercise more and to eat healthily. But do we? The first 3 are easy to understand and to implement i.e. we can stop smoking, we can stop or cut back on alcohol and, if we so choose, we can exercise more. In this day and age however, how do we do the latter - eat healthily? How do we get better nutrition? How do we get more energy?

Healthy Eating

Sadly, numerous studies have shown that the nutritional quality of our food is deteriorating and deteriorating badly. Swiss studies have shown that on average, the nutritional quality of our food, between 1985 and 2002 is down by a staggering 57%.

Why is this? Soil quality is getting poorer often through overproduction. Pesticides and chemicals are getting used more and more to increase the yield. There is air pollution and of course, transport time and the long shelf life. Both of these cause the nutritional value of many of our foodstuffs to deteriorate even more.

So how can we get our daily nutrition? How can we be sure that we are getting quality nutrition and how can we be sure that this extra nutrition does not come at a cost - extra calories?

Calories

Empty calories are part of the scourge of modern living. In the 1960's, men took in around 2,200 calories per day and now - 2,700. Women's intake also rose from 1,500 to 1,950 and we wonder why the majority are overweight and/or obese!

We exercise less, eat more and of course, the end result has to be overweight, obesity with serious concerns of diabetes.

On the whole, the population aren't stupid. They know that a salad (minus all the dressing) is much better nutrition wise than a pizza. They know that vegetables and fruit is a better choice than a bar of chocolate yet the vast majority still go for that pizza or chocolate.

So Why?
Where Does Poor Nutrition Begin?
Well … It Begins Every Day - in the Morning!

Breakfast

A typical Breakfast

It is drummed into us from an early age (or should be), that breakfast is THE most important meal of the day. We need to "break our fast" and to replace the nutrients used during the night in our "repair and grow" phase. 114 nutrients are required to feed our 100 trillion cells - give or take a trillion or 2!

What did you feed your cells with? What did you have for breakfast?

  • Do you ever feel hungry or tired around 11.00?
  • Do you feel like you need a coffee or a snack then?
  • What do you drink during the day?
  • And what does your lunch look like?
  • And then, do you make it until dinner time or do you need "something" around 4 in the afternoon?
  • What does your evening meal look like?
  • Do you have a good dinner but keep nibbling anyway?
  • Does it feel like your appetite is out of control and you devour whatever food comes your way?
  • Do you feel tired during the day? When especially?
  • Any headaches during the day?
  • Any digestive challenges?
  • How do you sleep at night?
  • How do you really feel?

Are you curious what these questions (and your answers) have to do with your breakfast - or lack of it?

Ideal Breakfast

Most of our regular breakfasts are packed with sugars and salt. White bread for toast is a simple carbohydrate that is immediately converted to sugar, the vast majority of our cereals are stacked with sugar and salt, muesli is full of sugar from all that dried fruit, fruit juices have loads of sugar whether it is added or not … The list goes on!

It's all very well talking about what you should NOT have for breakfast but what should you have? What is that elusive "Ideal Breakfast"?

An ideal breakfast has been developed, backed by scientific research, providing the body with the vital nutrients, the vitamins and minerals that our body needs to give you energy from protein and good carbohydrates. It helps the body maintain a stable blood sugar level, with fibre the programme may also help clean the intestines, helps improve absorption of nutrients, and helps to maintain fluid levels in the body - AND it is low in calories- AND it is delicious - AND there are 6 flavours.

This Ideal Breakfast helps stop the mid-morning cravings, the mid-afternoon slump keeping you bright and alert during the day.

Metabolism

There are of course other benefits to a good, healthy Ideal Breakfast. For those on a diet, eating an Ideal Breakfast kick starts the metabolism. Research has proven that this can increase your metabolic rate by 10% which, of course, means that you burn more calories. Burning more calories means losing more weight and the quality protein in the Ideal Breakfast helps retain more lean muscle which helps keep your metabolic rate high which means you burn more calories etc, etc. A nice "cycle" to be in.

Digestive System

Another bonus for many individuals, especially those that are reducing calories is that this morning eating stimulates the digestive system, helping the body absorb food and eliminate waste.

No Breakfast

So what happens when you have no breakfast?

No Breakfast

Well … as well as lowering your metabolic rate and increasing the potential for a sluggish digestive system, the diagram illustrates your dip in energy levels. If this is you, do you then crave a coffee and possibly a biscuit (or whatever) around 11.30? In essence, this is because your sugar levels have dropped and your body, or more correctly your pancreas says "hang about, the blood needs more sugar." You get hungry, eat a snack, get a sugar "high" but what happens? Your pancreas now says that there is too much sugar, insulin is pumped in, your sugar levels drop and you are back to being tired and jaded again. Your pancreas says "hang about, the blood needs more sugar etc, etc." This cycle continues and before you know it, the weight begins to pile on leading to overweight, obesity and diabetes!

Normal Breakfast

Normal Carbohydrate Breakfast

It is hugely surprising the amount of hidden sugars and salt in our everyday breakfast cereals, muesli, toast etc. Even the humble glass of freshly squeezed orange is full of sugar (yes, fructose is still a sugar) and calories (would you really eat those 4 or 5 oranges that are squeezed into your juice?).

How does this all affect your body? Basically the opposite to having no breakfast. You get an immediate sugar kick, insulin takes the excess sugar out of your blood stream, you feel tired, you need a snack, you get a sugar kick and so it goes on!
