The Pilates Method

a programme that improves muscle control, flexibility, co-ordination, strength and tone through physical and mental conditioning
Pilates works on the deep core muscles and the spine - the most important structure in the body and the source of the nervous system.
Pilates is a fitness regime that combines stretching and strengthening exercises designed to work the entire body in fluid movements.
Pilates' is concerned with the process itself and it works by building strength from the inside - out and rebalancing the body.
The goal is reached by a natural evolution in contrast to other forms of exercise that often “forces” results.

Joseph Pilates based his exercises on 6 central principles:

Concentration—Control—Centering

Precision—Breathing—Flowing Movement

Joseph Pilates 1880—1968

Born near Dusseldorf in Germany, Joseph Pilates suffered from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever as a child. His determination and drive to overcome these ailments led him to study various forms of exercise. He took these studies one step further by combining his knowledge of exercise and anatomy to create the Pilates Method.

Dancers
Joseph Pilates brought his revolutionary method of physical and mental conditioning to the United States in the early twenties. His studio in New York City caught the attention of the dance community and Pilates technique became an integral part of dance training

50 Years Ahead
Pilates felt that his work was probably about fifty years ahead of its time and although his name is still not yet a household word, people from all walks of life are discovering and choosing the Pilates technique as their fitness programme of choice.

Rehabilitation

Hospitals and physiotherapists worldwide are using the Pilates Method to rehabilitate injured athletes and dancers.
Many athletes, from footballers to golfers, now incorporate Pilates into their regular training.
If you are tired of the "pumping iron" atmosphere of conventional gyms and aerobic dancing studios and are basically looking for something that is effective and works, sign up for a course of Pilates!
