Salsa

Gary Young - Teacher

Salsa is the commonly used name for a form of music and thus dance that was previously known as Latin Music. The Spanish word “salsa” meaning sauce and of course refers to the hot sauce as commonly used in Latin American diets!

Style

There are as many Salsa dance styles as there are people dancing it. This is because Salsa is basically a “free-style” or “street dance”. It has always been free and spontaneous with no set routine to follow or reference standard.
Once, all you needed was a few basic moves and the rest was following the music with your heart.
Salsa today however has absorbed many other dance forms to become a much more sophisticated dance.

Learning

Your Salsa teacher, Gary Young explains “We all tend to get good at doing classes instead of realising our true aspiration of dancing freestyle fluently on the floor.”
Gary doesn’t teach conventional routines, instead, he teaches the guys structures and the women signals.
With this type of teaching, “If you are good in the class, you’ll be good on the floor”.
For Gary Young, dancing salsa is like playing jazz; “Salsa is something that comes from inside you, it’s a spontaneous emotional expression. By appreciating the principles underlying the dance, the guy can focus his complete attention on his partner, the connection between them and interpreting the music creatively in the moment”.
