Acupuncture and Dry Needling

Are acupuncture and dry needling the same thing?

acupunctureLooking at a photo of both forms of treatment you might not be able to tell the difference – both acupuncture and dry needling use thin, sterile needles to inserted into the skin.

But it’s the modality and aims that make the treatment process slightly different.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a form of treatment that has been in use for hundreds (thousands?!) of years and originated in Asia.

Acupuncture works with the body’s Chi – your body’s energy flow. Blockages or issues with the healthy movement or flow of chi within the body cause a number of different health issues.

Is is often used for pain management, headaches, depression, skin conditions and fertility.

Dry Needling

Dry needling is much more modern in origin and is much more focused on musculoskeletal issues – focusing on intramuscular stimulation and trigger points in knotted and tense muscles as well as reducing nerve irritation.

It is used to manage musculoskeletal pain particularly lower back pain, knee pain from osteoarthritis and muscle pain from sports.
