Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

acupunctureAccording to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health depends on the state of the body’s vital energy, or Qi. A smooth and balanced flow is associated with a healthy body, while a disrupted, obstructed or deficient flow manifests in illness. The aim is to treat the person and their constitution, as well as their condition, by restoring balance in their vital energy or Qi.

Within the framework of the Five-Element system, physical findings as well as the person’s history enable the practitioner to organise a diagnosis. This helps identify the element, organ or bodily function that under internal or external stress, becomes imbalanced and initiates a state of disease.

The insertion of ultra fine needles into specific points along the body’s energy pathways can stimulate the human body’s natural healing response, release pain-killing endorphins and improve functioning of the hormonal system.

Diagnosis and Treatment

All treatment must start with a full consultation and assessment to determine the best route forward for you and your specific situation. You will be asked about your current symptoms and any treatment you have received so far, your medical history, diet, digestive system, sleeping patterns and emotional state. This information, along with pulse diagnosis, allows your acupuncturist to fully assess your general state of health in order to identify your underlying pattern of disharmony. This full diagnosis will allow your acupuncturist to tailor a treatment suited to your individual needs.

Initial consultations take 1½ hour and follow ups take an hour. During the initial consultation you will work with your acupuncturist to outline a realistic treatment schedule so that you both know what you hope to achieve and have a realistic understanding of how to achieve it!
