What is Speech and Language Therapy?

Speech and Language Therapy is a specialised therapy to help improve communication skills in children and adults. And also some support for issues with eating or swallowing. It focuses on strengthening and working the muscles in the jaw, tongue, face and throat to help you better make sounds.

Who might benefit from speech and language therapy?

Children might need speech and language therapy for many reasons, including:

  • hearing impairments
  • cognitive (intellectual, thinking) or other developmental delays
  • weak oral muscles
  • chronic hoarseness
  • cleft lip or cleft palate
  • autism
  • motor planning problems
  • articulation problems
  • fluency disorders
  • respiratory problems (breathing disorders)
  • feeding and swallowing disorders
  • traumatic brain injury

Adults might benefit from speech and language therapy for:

  • communication or eating and swallowing problems following neurological impairments and degenerative conditions, including stroke, head injury, Parkinson’s disease and dementia
  • voice problems
  • mental health issues
  • learning difficulties
  • physical disabilities
  • stammering
  • hearing impairment

Bilingual Children

Edit, our speech and language therapist, has her Masters in supporting bilingual children, something many families focus on here in Marbella. As a mother to two tri-lingual children Edit understands the needs of children exposed to more than one language. She offers clinical assessments for evaluating the difficulties your child may experience with bilingualism, as well as workshops and support programs for parents.

Many people think that speech therapy is only for children with speech disorders that affect pronunciation. But it also helps children who struggle with spoken and written language. That includes those with language disorders and reading challenges.

In addition to speech challenges, therapy can support children with:

  • Receptive language (understanding language)
  • Expressive language (using language)
  • Social communication (using language in socially appropriate ways)
  • Reading and spelling (including dyslexia)
