Those “things in your shoes” aka orthotics

Most of my patients, at some time or another, probably end up in my gait analysis room. I find taking a video of someone and showing it to them really helps them understand what I’m on about! BUT as soon as I mention the idea of orthotics aka “putting something in their shoes” many people run for hills. So it’s always lovely to hear from people who took the leap of faith that I might not be trying to kill them.

“I would like you to know how pleased I am with the results of your supply and fitting of orthotic insoles.
Over the years, on one of my feet, the toes had become crushed together so much so that one toe had been forced upwards and was resting on my big toe.
Two years ago, in 2012, I visited your clinic where my gait was assessed for the fitting of the appropriate insoles. Over this period, my toes are now almost back to their normal position. It was interesting to observe the comparison computer graphs clearly showing the improvement gained since fitting the insoles.
I am now happy to re-order a further 2 pairs so that hopefully I can continue to maintain this excellent improvement.”

It’s so important for people to understand that inserts and orthotics are not the same thing. I get inserts to give extra padding when I run or ice skate, but I don’t have any major problems with my feet. My brother on the other hand has had orthotics since he was a young child. If he ever tried to work out with just inserts, his feet, ankles, and back would all bother him. If your inserts aren’t helping relieve pain and discomfort, it may be important to go to a specialist to see if you need more than just average inserts.

      Hi Jackson,
You make a great point. There is a world of difference between an insert or generic insole and a medical orthotic. For some people they do just need a bit of something extra, but for many, something a little more is required. A specialist can help you find the right insoles or orthotics for you. That, in my opinion, is the whole point of taking the time to have an appointment and assess someone, so that you can find the right solution for them.

Thanks for taking the time and talking about orthotics too many people tend to criticize the notions about orthotics and what can be done with it. However, I think that inserts are the best choice for foot pain relief.
