A Trip for a better knee

I’m often asked what makes the work I do at Bodyworks different. I explain parts of what I do here, but it can be hard to understand how that works for you as a patient.

So I asked one of my patients to tell you:

A year ago I fell badly and damaged my right knee. After multiple visits to the A&E department, appointments with Specialists, my GP and 10 months of physiotherapy my knee wasn’t getting any better.

When I arrived in Spain on 3rd October my knee was swollen and painful and I could hardly put any weight on my leg.

A friend recommended Estelle Mitchell at the Bodyworks Clinic after his successful knee treatment.

When I hobbled into the clinic I could not even lift my right leg onto the couch unaided, the whole leg was swollen and extremely painful.

After a thorough examination Estelle explained that I had been walking on a “bent” knee for the entire year, I was completely unable to straighten my leg. My MRI scan showed damaged cartilage and bruised bones. My knee was a mess.

Estelle and her team were wonderful. Everything was explained to me, what was happening inside and around my knee, with the help of lots of diagrams and models of the knee. I learnt more about my knee in the first hour with Estelle than I had learnt in a whole year in the UK.

I embarked on a course of Magnetic Resonance Therapy (MRT), iced my knee and did my exercises at home. Estelle also put me on crutches temporarily to keep the weight off my leg.

During the daily treatment I could feel my leg getting gradually better and after just one week I was walking so much easier. The swelling had gone down considerably and for the first time in a year I was not taking painkillers every 4 hours!

I will be sorry to go back to the UK and leave Estelle but I am leaving far healthier and happier than I have been for a year since my fall.

I am sure that if I had not come to Spain, my knee would not have improved and I would be facing knee surgery. It was a blessing in disguise coming to Spain with a bad knee.

I cannot recommend Estelle and her team at the Bodyworks Clinic and this treatment highly enough.

I am looking forward to coming back to Spain in the New Year and dancing the New Year in.

Linda

Hi my name is Ayfer, I am 42 years old, I have been suffering for the past 2 years with ilio tibial scatica, do I go to a gp for a good thorough understanding of my symptoms, or do I need to go to a podiatrist or pyshiotherapist? I live in Melbourne,Australia, and I hope i can find the right help for me.Traveling to Spain will not be possible. Thank you for listening.

      Hi Ayfer,

Thank you for getting in touch!

I would strongly suggest that you see a physiotherapist, especially in Australia they are highly trained and very competent (you have some of the best physios in the world!). They will be able to do a full assessment and then, if needed refer you to a podiatrist for orthotic support.

You can also use Formthotics (a New Zealand product) if you can’t get an affordable pair of tailored orthotics – http://www.formthotics.com/ If you contact them directly, mentioning my name (I’ve used them for a long time!) then they will be able to point you in the right direction of someone locally who can help you.

Best of luck, and I’m always here if you fancy a long flight!
